Luc Brusselmans
nl - fr

The work of Luc Brusselmans consists of different collections of visually simple objects that are carefully crafted to create a subtle balance between the abstract and the figurative, prompting the spectator to experience lightness of being.

The artist combines the use of solid and see-through materials - such as wood, lead, zinc, glass and softly coloured, perforated tissue paper - into constructions of stark contrasting contours which transport the spectator beyond the immediately visible.

As such, the artistic approach of Brusselmans is inspired by transcendence, his prime tool that of diffuse light.

Whether held up in a solid frame, rising from a monolithic mount piece or seemingly floating in the air, each object suggests the possibility of matter dissolving into a void, thus triggering perception of translucence, infinite distances, transcendence and, ultimately, human vulnerability. These perceptions are equally valid whether the spectator chooses to view the object from afar or from close-by, or whether viewing each object on its own or as part of a collection.

Translucence is the recurring theme that defines Brusselmans' work. His message - the search for transparency - stands out sharply in a world that is becoming ever more complex and opaque.
